âHouston, I mean, Kimi, we have a problem,â I said. âThere are too many small guys. The Shadow wonât be able to handle them all quickly enough. Get ready to fight back. And thereâll be more than two. A lot more.â
The girlâs eyes grew wide as they followed the entire gang emerging from the mist.
âChaos take me! What was I thinking when I followed you?â
âThank you, Kimi. I have faith in you, too.â
I met the first of the âroly-poliesâ with a Spark. It couldnât be expected to inflict any serious damage, but hopefully the opponent would get stunned for a crucial moment. Taking an immediate step to the right, I slashed on the diagonal. The temple blade seemed ideal for such eventualities. Where Kimiâs swords only clanged impotently, my own weapon sliced through the enemy like a hot knife through butter. Before I knew it, I had chopped two little guys in half, but then there were suddenly too many of them around. I was no longer able to swing properly, and half-hearted pokes or outright mistakes could easily cost me a limb. I knew I wouldnât be able to hold the line on my own for a single minute. However, Kimi was covering my back, and I was covering hers. We stood like that, surrounded by the steel beasts, waving them off as best we could. Fortunately for us, the leader of the pack had deigned us with its personal appearance, so its minions seemed to curb their unbridled enthusiasm, merely keeping us from going anywhere and waiting for the boss to deliver the coup de grâce. Oh, and the new entrants kept pouring in, pushing the front ranks forward from behind, tightening the noose. No matter what we did, stopping that onslaught of dozens of sizable monsters seemed impossible. Theyâd overwhelm us in a minute or two and wouldnât mind at all if it cost them dearly. Alone, I would probably survive for a tad longer using all my protective talents, one after another, while the Shadow was taking care of the boss, but I had Kimi with me, and it upset the entire calculation. She had no such talents, and I wouldnât be able to shield her from behind if I actively went on the offensive. So, instead of pressing the attack forward, we would simply have to concentrate on staying in one piece somehow, for as long as we could.
